AMWELL TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A man was killed in a crash on I-79 in Washington County late Monday morning.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. on I-79 North in Amwell Township.

Pennsylvania State Police say 66-year-old James Coppock Brown Jr., of Burgettstown, was driving north in the left lane when he tried to pass another vehicle using the left shoulder and center median.

Brown then struck a guide rail and lost control of the vehicle.

Police say Brown's vehicle went across both northbound lanes of traffic, off the right side of the road and struck another guide rail.

Brown's vehicle then went over the guide rail and down a steep embankment, overturning several times.

The coroner's office says Brown was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Brown was thrown from the vehicle in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:20 a.m.
