ROSTRAVER, Pa. (KDKA) - A woman who runs a non-profit animal sanctuary out of her home was able to get out safely but was unable to save some of the animals.

According to the owner, Wendi Kraemer, the owner of Angels Journey Home Rescue, 12 cats died, she lost her credit cards and money and is trying to rent out a motel floor for the animals that did survive. She is also seeking a heated barn for an elderly goat. She's hoping that other shelters and rescues can help her animals.

Firefighters responded to the smokey scene on Route 51 near Vernon Drive early on Friday morning.

"I was sleeping, and I heard a boom and I hurried up and ran out and I saw a fire coming out my house," Kraemer said.

She was able to get out and is now trying to find a place to stay for her and her animals.

"Everybody is full right now because of covid. Every rescue, every shelter and some end up in kill shelters," she said.

Firefighters are looking into what may have sparked the fire.
