Horses Rescued From Frigid Central Pennsylvania Pool

BOALSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Firefighters rescued two horses that fell into a frigid in-ground swimming pool in central Pennsylvania.

The Centre Daily Times reports the mare and foal broke through the pool's cover and were treading water in the deep end Tuesday morning in Harris Township.

Firefighters made steps from pallets and rigged ropes and bridles to guide the mare to the pool's shallow end. They say the foal made it there on its own.

Firefighters say the horses had been trying to climb onto a 4- to 5-inch-thick coating in the deep end.

They say the rescue took about an hour. Neither horse suffered serious injuries.

Harris Township is about 8 miles southeast of Penn State University's main campus in State College.
