HOMEWOOD (KDKA) –Police are investigating after a man was shot and killed in Homewood Tuesday afternoon.

According to emergency dispatchers, the shooting happened near the intersection of North Homewood and Frankstown Avenues around noon.

The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Thomas McCellan.

Police say the intersection is a busy one, so the afternoon shooting comes as a surprise.

"That corner is is a comfortable hang out for older males," said Pittsburgh Police Cmdr. RaShall Brackney. "Many who have a previous history of drug or alcohol use."

McCellan died at the scene. He was shot several times.

Many who know the area say he was a fixture on the busy corner.

Police say a new Shot Spotter in the area didn't identify the gunfire in this case, but there were multiple shots fired.

"At this point it seems the person would have been on foot," said Brackney. "I have not received any reports of anyone speeding away from the scene or any descriptions."
