History Center, Mt. Washington Among Top Locations For Wholey's Fish

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Heinz History Center and Mount Washington have emerged as frontrunners to become the new home of Wholey's smiling fish.

Last month, Wholey's asked the public to help choose a new location for the iconic sign.

More than 1,000 votes were cast, and more than 300 voted for the History Center.

Mount Washington was the second most popular choice followed by McKees Rocks, which was the company's first home.

The two other ideas were on a bridge/near the water and the Bigelow Boulevard retaining wall.

The sign near Wholey's store in the Strip District is coming down because that old storage building that carries the fish image is being converted into apartments.

"That fish is part of Pittsburgh," said Mayor Bill Peduto. "It's iconic, it makes us smile when we see it and we don't want to lose it as we see progress happening."

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that the History Center says it would be confusing to have the sign just a few blocks away from Wholey's.

Wholey's will now approach the Mount Washington community organization about having the sign moved there.
