Highlands School District Teachers To Return To Classroom On Tuesday

NATRONA HEIGHTS (KDKA) -- Classes will resume in the Highlands School District next week.

The teachers and other staff members began walking the picket lines earlier this week after last-minute talks with the School Board broke down.

A total of 191 teachers, counselors, nurses and social workers walked off the job early Wednesday morning.

The sticking points in negotiations are salaries and health care.

Now though, school district officials say the state Department of Education has notified them that the strike will only be four days.

That means teachers will return to their classrooms on Tuesday.

To make up for those lost days, the school year has been extended to June 15.

The union and the district have been bargaining for 16 months.

District officials and the Education Association have scheduled a bargaining session for Friday at 3 p.m.
