According to a report from state police, the suspect sped toward the troopers, prompting them to open fire in an attempt to stop him. The suspect rammed police cars at a high rate of speed before losing control and crashing into a tree.

Witnesses believe the car then caught on fire.

"I heard somebody holler 'get the driver, get the driver,' and then I heard somebody shout 'the car,' and when I looked up I saw smoke coming up into the air, so I guess the car caught on fire," said Robert Conway.

The driver, identified as David A. Wingrove of New Salem, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian. The Fayette County District Attorney confirmed that Wingrove died of his injuries Wednesday morning.

Two troopers sustained minor injuries.
