Heritage Valley Beaver Nurses To Strike 1 Day Over Impasse

BEAVER, Pa. (AP) - Nurses at the Heritage Valley Beaver hospital in western Pennsylvania will strike for one day later this month over a contract impasse.

The hospital's 500 nurses say they'll strike July 19 after negotiations Tuesday night failed to yield a new contract.

The Service Employees International Union Healthcare Pennsylvania union is upset because the hospital wants to raise health care premiums for nurses by 50 percent and exclude spouses from coverage. Similar moves by companies have been spurred by changes that are part of the federal Affordable Care Act.

Michael Baker, a spokesman for Heritage Valley Health System, says hospital officials are disappointed and say their contract offer is fair. The hospital will remain open during the strike.

The last contract expired June 30.
