Four-Vehicle Turnpike Crash Causes Significant Delays

HAMPTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Traffic was reduced to a single lane after a four-vehicle crash along the Pennsylvania Turnpike Tuesday morning.
According to officials, the crash happened in a construction zone in the westbound lanes near mile marker 38 in Hampton Township, around 10:30 a.m.
A car collided with a box truck, a van, and a tractor-trailer. Three people were injured and the driver of the car had to be cut out of the wreckage.
"it was a rescue. the vehicle had to be cut," said Michael Barton, of the North Hampton Volunteer Fire Department.
He was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. That firefighter tells KDKA's Kym Gable that the man was conscious and alert when he was transported.
"We had three individuals sustain injuries. One went to Forbes [Hospital]. Two went to UPMC Presby, one by LifeFlight," said Cpl. Jason Terwilliger, of Pennsylvania State Police.
A North Hampton firefighter said it's "a miracle" that anyone survived the horrific crash.
The car became wedged between the other vehicles after police say it failed to stop before entering the construction area.
All lanes of traffic reopened around 12:30 p.m.
