Growing Sinkhole Causes Concerns On North Side

NORTH SIDE (KDKA) - Crews started work to fix a sinkhole on the North Side Tuesday morning.

The sinkhole was spotted Monday afternoon on James Street, near Allegheny General Hospital.

James St. next to Allegheny General Hospital remains closed from East North Ave. to Knoll Street.

"We have a collapsed sewer line. We have a broken water line as well. The major problem we have right now is there's major electrical conduit lines, where the work needs to be done," Guy Costa, City of Pittsburgh's Chief Operations Officer said.

Costa said those lines provide power to Allegheny General Hospital, so getting them above ground is the first priority.

Duquesne Light crews are slated to move the lines over the next few days.

Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority crews will then come in and repair the line before re-filling the 15 to 20-foot hole caused after the gushing water washed what was in the hole away.

The James Street parking garage at Allegheny General Hospital remains open, but expect some detours to get there.

"It's a very populated road because a lot of people come to park here for Allegheny General Hospital. Now, I got a lot of traffic on my street," Charles Carl, who lives on the North Side, said.

The goal is to get James Street reopened by Friday, but officials say they're taking things on a day-by-day basis.
