Group Gathers To Honor 6 Homeless People Lost In 2015

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - As we close out 2015, we tend to reminisce on the big stories that happened over the last year.

But, one topic is all too often overlooked.

Homelessness has been a growing problem in Pittsburgh for years.

Last night, a local group gathered under a downtown bridge to remember those who have died this year.

Since Jan. 1, six people who were homeless or living on the streets have died in Pittsburgh.

"It's a gathering where we remember the people that passed away, what was good and strong about them, and then we try to dedicate ourselves to helping prevent this in the future," Operation Safety Net Medical Director Dr. Jim Withers said.

Dr. Withers has made it his life's work to help the homeless. But, he's not alone.

"We are joining together with over 150 cities and counties across the country to commemorate those homeless individuals we have lost in 2015," Dr. Withers said.

Many social service agencies were there as well. The names of the six who died were placed on bronze plaques and mounted under the bridge near the intersection of Fort Pitt Boulevard and Grant Street.

"Just be aware of the people that are out here that are suffering. We tend to either forget them or maybe think in negative terms of the folks who are out here," Dr. Withers said.

It wasn't all somber as music filled the air on the first night of winter.

Dr. Withers said there is one more thing we all can do to help the homeless

"Just being kind to the people that you meet out there and keeping them in your prayers. It's important," he said.
