Gov. Wolf Critical Of Wages Paid At UPMC
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Gov. Tom Wolf has come out criticizing the wages paid at UPMC.
Wolf joined "The KDKA Morning News" with Larry Richert and John Shumway to talk about his comments.
Wolf was asked about the comment he made to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review about how he wouldn't treat his employees the way UPMC treats theirs.
"I answered that question based on my experience as a business owner," Wolf said.
He added that while on the campaign trail last year, he heard complaints from UPMC employees about compensation, benefits, and disregard of workers' opinions.
When asked about UPMC's claim that the average salary for employees is $61,000 a year, and minimum wage is $2 higher, Wolf said average is meaningless.
"You could have very high compensation and very low compensation, you average them together and it could be a nice number. It doesn't say anything about what you have at the extremes," Wolf said.
Wolf also discussed allegations that his chief of staff, Katie McGinty, called UPMC and urged them to allow their workers to unionize.
He says he she hasn't, "and I certainly didn't know that if she did, but I'm almost positive she did not."
