Get Marty: Local School Kids Get New Winter Gear

McKEES ROCKS (KDKA) -- A McKees Rocks woman saw a few kids with cold hands at a bus stop and reached out to KDKA'S Get Marty for help.

"I saw the little girls standing there rubbing their hands together. It was so cold. I had to get them some mittens," says Dawn Fitzwater.

Fitzwater wanted to gather up more than 700 pairs of gloves and hats for all of the children at bus stops in the Sto-Rox School District.

Fitzwater had friends donate a few hundred pairs of gloves. Then, she asked Get Marty for help.

We immediately got involved, along with the McDonald's Corporation got involved.

The folks at McDonald's purchased nearly $2,000 worth of gloves and hats for the children of Sto-Rox.

County Manager Willy McKain got involved, adding 300 pairs of gloves for the children.

"This Get Marty event is something we believe in. County employees stepped up in a big way," says McKain.

On Wednesday afternoon, all 700 students at Sto-Rox Elementary got a set of gloves and a hat.

"Thank you for helping me help these children," said Fitzwater.

Any extra gloves and mittens will be given to local charities.
