Pittsburgh Weather: Glaze Of Ice Expected As Freezing Rain Begins To Fall

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Thursday and Friday are First Alert Days, which means KDKA has you covered and will let you know on the changing precipitation hour by hour so you can plan your day and stay safe if you have to travel on the icy roads.

We are under a Winter Storm Warning for Pittsburgh and areas north and west until Friday morning. There's a Winter Weather Advisory for areas east and along the ridges through Friday morning.

North of I-80 will see snow the rest of the storm through Friday morning where 4 to 6 inches is expected. There will be a 12-hour period of freezing rain for areas in the Pittsburgh region where 0.10 to 0.25 inches of ice is expected. The ridges will see a switch over from rain to freezing rain around dinner time and through midnight where a glaze of ice is possible.

One to 3 inches of snow is expected in Pittsburgh and 2 to 4 inches for areas near 422.

The warm temperatures of the past couple of days, along with steady rainfall are combining to make high levels on creeks and streams south of Pittsburgh.

There's a Flood Watch for Greene, western Fayette and Westmoreland counties through Thursday night due to higher amounts of rain and runoff. Rivers, streams and low-lying areas could be flooding.

There's also an Areal Flood Warning for Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Washington, Westmoreland and Monongalia counties until 7 a.m. Friday. The word "areal" means "area wide."

Everyone will gradually switch from sleet to snow around midnight and it'll last through tomorrow morning which could cause more delays and icy roads. Temperatures will stay below freezing and temperatures only make it to 20 Saturday with lows in the single digits.
