Fort Pitt Tunnel Weekend Work Wraps Up Early

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Weekend work on the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel wrapped up early.

The outbound side of the Fort Pitt Tunnel closed at about 10:40 Friday night and was expected to remain closed until Monday morning.

However, this weekend's work wrapped up around noon and the road has reopened to traffic.

Crews are removing the false ceiling inside the tunnel, just as they did with the Squirrel Hill Tunnel.

This was the first of eight planned weekend closures.

The weekend closures will have to be carefully choreographed around the Steelers, Pitt, Penguins and holiday shopping season, so there will only be one more this year.

"That will be on the inbound side," PennDOT's Steve Cowan said earlier this month. "That will happen in December. We're still in the process of scheduling that."
