Man In Critical Condition After Downtown Hit And Run

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A man was injured in what appeared to be a hit and run downtown.

The intersection of Fort Duquesne Boulevard and Seventh Street was shut down while police investigated the accident that happened just before 4:30 a.m. on Friday.

Police say someone spotted the man on the ground along Fort Duquesne Boulevard.

They say the man suffered severe head injuries and a compound fracture to one ankle.

He was transported to AGH in critical condition.

The vehicle that reportedly hit the man was not found at the scene.

There were no witnesses or vehicle descriptions, according to police.

As police continue to investigate, KDKAs' Meghan Schiller talked with police about the search for the driver.

Police can't say how long it will take to review the footage captured by the cameras at the entrance to the Andy Warhol Museum, but said they will post updates throughout the weekend.

Pittsburgh Police Spokeswoman Cara Cruz described the victim's condition as "extremely critical condition with a severe head injury and a compound fracture to the ankle."

First responders loaded him onto a stretcher and he wasn't talking or moving at the time. KDKA watched as they put him in the back of an ambulance and headed to Allegheny General Hospital.

The driver of a gray car stopped in the intersection after noticing the man down on the ground. Police said he called 911 and tried to help, but the victim was unconscious.

"There's definitely going to be looking at all of the camera footage that's available to them," said Cruz.

"They're extremely also thankful to the Good Samaritan who got out of the car."

The bureau's Collision Investigation Unit arrived and put down orange cones throughout the intersection. Officers snapped pictures, measured distances and picked up pieces of evidence still down on the concrete.

The victim is listed in critical condition at AGH. His name has not been released.
