Former Dir. Of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Dies At 84

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The former conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has died.

Lorin Maazel was 84 years old.

Maazel was a child prodigy who attended Pittsburgh's Peabody High School and then the University of Pittsburgh.

He passed away from complications connected to pneumonia at his home in Virginia Sunday.

He was the director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 1984 to 1996.

Gov. Tom Corbett reacted to Maazel's death Sunday saying his absence will be a loss.

"His tenure as musical director of The Pittsburgh Symphony, and his entire career here and abroad, affirmed Pennsylvania's reputation as the birthplace of artistic genius."

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto shared similar sentiments, saying "Like so many before him, Lorin Maazel came here as a child and now departs us as a man whose life's work has added to the lustre of his adopted home town."
