Former Allegheny County Commissioner Jim Flaherty Dies At 85

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Former Allegheny County Commissioner and Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court Judge Jim Flaherty passed away Thursday afternoon at age 85.

Flaherty had retired to Chester County, and died peacefully with his wife Katie and all five children at his side.

Flaherty's late brother Pete was Mayor of Pittsburgh and his son Mark served as Allegheny County Controller.

Flaherty graduated cum laude from Washington & Jefferson College in 1953. He served in the military during the Korean Conflict, after which he attended the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, receiving an LL.B in 1959.

After completing his formal education, Flaherty worked as a trial lawyer and partner for a litigation firm. He founded his own firm in 1969, practicing municipal, school and public employee labor law.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
