Fittipaldo: Rule Proposal Attempt To Make NFL As Tolerant As Possible

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- The NFL Scouting Combine is taking place in Indianapolis. One story not related to draft prospects is a rule proposal that would assess a 15-yard penalty for racial slurs.

Ray Fittipaldo of the Post-Gazette told Tab Douglas and Stacy Kauffman that the rule could include other slurs as well.

"They really want to get that out of the game," Fittipaldo said. "The culture, the working environment for these players, you want to make as open and tolerant as possible so everyone from all walks of life can feel like they have a home in the NFL."

While Michael Sam and Johnny Manziel have drawn the biggest crowds of reporters at the Combine, Fittipaldo said that the Steelers' attention has been elsewhere.

"I think the biggest thing that they've probably looked at this week was the deep receiver class. I think there's a lot of speculation that they could go and get Ben (Roethlisberger) a big receiver in the first round," Fittipaldo said. "Guys like Mike Evans, Kelvin Benjamin, and just a whole slew of receivers who are really good players this year. I think the Steelers are probably focusing in on those guys, as well as many others that they want to take a look at here."

Fittipaldo told Douglas and Kauffman that the on-field workouts are only a small part of the Combine.

"The way that the Combine is covered now, as I mentioned almost 1,00 reporters there this week, in addition to the one-on-one interviews the coaches and the GMs can sort of sit back and the scouts can sort of sit back and see how these guys handle media," Fittipaldo said. "I heard a couple of GMs say that that's an added benefit."
