Father, 3-Year-Old Son Killed In Indiana Co. Crash

YOUNG TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – A small cross, bits of plastic debris and a little boy's shoe mark the spot where two cars came together and two lives were lost.

"It was loud, it actually sounded like an explosive it was loud," said witness Nicole Henderson.

Henderson lives near the intersection of Route 286 and Gemmell Road. She ran into her backyard Thursday night to see a brutal crash scene. At first she thought it was one car perhaps into a tree.

"Then I saw a second car split in half," she said.

State police say a car driven by 42-year-old Joseph Wells Sr. crossed into oncoming traffic, slamming into another vehicle. Wells and his son Joseph Wells Jr. were killed. His 1-year-old daughter was critically injured.

"Joe was living with us, he just came back from Las Vegas. He was trying to get everything straightened out for them," said friend Chelsea Suwoitch.

Suwoitch came to collect whatever was left, including little Joey's socks and shoes.

"He was so full of action, loved everybody, full of smiles," she said.

The passengers of the other vehicle suffered moderate to minor injuries. Why and how Joe Wells Sr. ended up crossing the center line may never be known.
