A worker was killed and another was injured while working on a bridge rehabilitation project in Westmoreland County on Tuesday morning.

It all happened late on Tuesday morning along a closed stretch of Route 993 in North Huntington Township just outside of Irwin. The incident happened at a PennDOT construction site where a subcontractor was working to fix a local bridge.

A call went out for workers hurt at the site and North Huntington Township police responded, as did Pennsylvania State Police. It was first considered a vehicle crash but was later determined to be a construction accident.

North Huntington Township Police confirmed that 53-year-old Brian Keefer of Indian Head, Pennsylvania, was killed after being run over by a large construction cleaning truck. Another person was injured and was released from the hospital.

Both OSHA and North Huntington Township detectives are investigating what caused this accident to occur. There was no word on who was operating the vehicle at the time of the accident and eyewitnesses are being interviewed.

Route 993 was closed Monday to start for this construction project and it will remain closed until that project is complete. However, there is no word on when that construction will resume.
