A man is dead after police said he was crushed by a large boulder at a quarry in Westmoreland County on Tuesday evening.

First responders were called to Heidelberg Materials' Torrance Quarry in Torrance around 4:25 p.m. on Tuesday for reports of an accident. The Westmoreland County Office of the Coroner said 61-year-old James Gershman, of Indiana, was working in a mine shaft when a large rock crushed him.

The coroner said the man was pronounced dead at 5:47 p.m. The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy.

KDKA reached out to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Heidelberg Materials, but did not hear back on Tuesday.  Police are investigating. No other information was released on Tuesday.

According to its website, Heidelberg Materials is a supplier of cement, aggregates, ready mixed concrete and asphalt. It has more than 450 locations and approximately 9,000 employees.

KDKA talked to a relative of someone who works at the quarry in Torrance. They said several dozen people work there.
