Fans Seem Unfazed As Price Of Pirates Tickets Goes Up

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Only the most maniacal Pirates fans think about baseball on a day like today, but a few showed up at the box office first thing, despite the shivering cold.

"Buying early," said one fan. "Get all my tickets set, so I'm set for the season."

This year, fans will need to dig a little deeper, prices are going up for most tickets -- especially for opening day.

"It's mostly based on demand," said Drew Cloud with the Pirates.

The Pirates call it dynamic pricing. They're charging a premium for the popular games -- Friday and Saturday nights -- and lower prices during the week.

"I would relate ticket prices to supply and demand," said Cloud. "As well as the fact that we have more season ticket holders now, who get the best value in the building and we want more people to have some type of plan."

With plan holders taking up more seats, demand is growing. And so are the prices, but fans we spoke with aren't too bothered.

"Yeah, some not much," one fan said. "Not when you look at entertainment costs in other sports."

Comparatively, baseball's still a good value.

"We have a good team," said Dave Gallo of Uptown. "This isn't 30, 40 years ago, this is now. It's a wonderful stadium, it's an amazing place to be, enjoy it."

So, despite the increase, in the coming months, these hardy few will be followed by tens of thousands of loyal Pirates fans who will pay whatever to see their beloved Bucs.
