Man Surrenders, Ending Standoff In East Liberty

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man has surrendered after police and the SWAT team surrounded his home in East Liberty on Wednesday afternoon.
It all started after 3:30 p.m. at a home on Enright Court, near the intersection with Broad Street. It is just blocks from the busy Bakery Square business complex.
The view from NewsChopper 2 showed a heavy police presence on the scene.
Officials began moving neighbors and onlookers back into a safety zone after the man barricaded himself inside the home. The shut down several nearby streets and evacuated some residents.

According to the man's family members, he was not armed. However, they say he's been dealing with some mental health issues and had just gotten out of Western Psych.
The man has been identified by officials as 27-year-old Nigel Ryce. A Pittsburgh Public Safety Department spokeswoman said he had violated a Protection from Abuse Order, or PFA.
The family was cooperating with law enforcement at the scene.
Police and negotiators used a bullhorn to try and make contact with the man, but when he refused to come out, they began throwing tear gas into the home.
He eventually surrendered and was taken into custody.
Neighbors were allowed back into their homes around 6:30 p.m. while firefighters began ventilating the home from all the tear gas.
No injuries were reported.
