Dukes Coach Scheduled For More Surgery

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) -- Duquesne's stunning 10-point upset victory Saturday against Dayton was supposed to be celebratory.

After all, at 9-16, Dukes' fans were looking for reasons to cheer.

But the program's collective minds have a heavy focus on a Philadelphia hospital room.

Head coach Jim Ferry revealing to the public after the 83-73 victory over the Flyers that assistant coach John Rhodes was diagnosed with a head and neck cancer earlier this month. Ferry then stated that Rhodes, last Tuesday, was struck by a car during the team's trip to LaSalle, breaking a leg and suffering a fracture in his neck.

"[Rhodes] had emergency surgery on Tuesday night," Ferry said. "He's doing better. He's out of the [intensive care unit]. He's scheduled to have surgery again Monday. He's pretty banged up."

"But as everybody in this room knows, 'Big John,' he's probably the most positive person that's out there," he added.

Rhodes has been one of Ferry's assistants for the past three seasons.
