RAYNE TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) -- Indiana County District Attorney Pat Dougherty put it plainly when asked about teenagers' general thought patterns and what happened along Wynook Road in Indiana County early Sunday morning.

"They don't make the best decisions when they should, and that's clearly what happened here," Dougherty said.

What happened? State police say a 14-year-old, allegedly drunk, and another teen decided to take a joy ride around Marion Center around 2:50 a.m.

Troopers say from the get-go, this was a bad situation. A 14-year-old was behind the wheel of a car he shouldn't have been driving, allegedly drunk with a friend in the early morning hours, but it would get a lot worse when they came around a turn and went straight into a farm pond.

A picture from the Marion Center Volunteer Fire Department shows the car fully submerged with the headlights still on. Both young people were somehow able to get out of the sunken vehicle and swim to shore.

The names of the two teens are not being released. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment for hypothermia. Whose car it was and who discovered the two isn't being released.

Dougherty says the teen behind the wheel faces serious charges.

"This shows how dangerous alcohol in the hands of minors is. We got very fortunate that we're not here talking about two lost lives today," Dougherty said.
