District, US Attorneys Join Art Rooney II In Domestic Violence Awareness Rally

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Organizations with vital messages to share often converge on Market Square to sound off.

"Today we're here, because it's Domestic Violence Awareness Month," said one speaker.

Friday, the Center for Victims spread that awareness by painting it purple.

The guest speakers wore it proudly too.

District Attorney Stephen Zappala joined forces with US Attorney David Hickton and Steelers President Art Rooney, II.

"Obviously in recent months in the NFL, we have been in the center of a lot of attention, a lot of negative attention," said Rooney.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month has been observed since 1987, but recent stories in the national media and professional sports has brought the issue to the global forefront.

"Hopefully we can keep shining the light on it, because, as has been said here today. You know, there are a lot of victims out there that have no connection to professional sports and that's where the light needs to be shined," said Rooney.
