Derry Goose-Prevention Tactic Has Some Residents Frustrated
DERRY BOROUGH (KDKA) – Some Derry residents are angry over the wild appearance of Ethel Springs Lake.
It's placid and picturesque, the body of water has so much going for it. But for some, it's fouled by excess waterfowl.
The Canada geese happily invade homes and lawns, eating away and leaving calling cards.
In an attempt to block the geese, the Derry Municipal Authority decided to grow the weeds and flowers around the lake. In theory, the geese wouldn't want to walk through the thicket.
"It makes absolutely no difference to the geese whatsoever," said Angela Glitsky of Derry. "It's the same whether the grass is high or low."
Glitsky walks and runs the ring around the lake regularly. The over-growth may not deter geese, but she likes it.
"It smells like flowers, instead of dead fish or goose droppings," she said.
However, some residents are sick of looking at the tall grass and say it's attracting pests.
Derry Borough officials were unavailable for comment, but indications from residents are the grand goose wall of weeds will be coming down, probably in July.
As for the geese, they're probably not going anywhere.
