Denzel Washington's Production Of "Fences" Wraps Filming In The Hill District

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Oscar-winning movie star Denzel Washington won a Tony Award for his Broadway role in the August Wilson play, "Fences," set in the playwright's native Hill District in 1957.

Film crews on the Hill wrapped up work Tuesday on a movie version of the play, directed by Washington.

"Our production has been thrilled filming here in Pittsburgh," said unit publicist Cid Swank. "Everyone has been excellent to us. The Hill District neighborhood has opened their arms, and let us be here to film this important film called 'Fences.'"

"We can't get in and out of our driveway a lot of times because of the parking situation, but all in all, it's an experience," said neighbor Austin Stewart. "A good experience."

Neighbor Ronald Delouvpre has four grandchildren in the movie.

"They've had about three or four days work now," he said. "Today's the last day for them, I think."

It's also the last day for dozens of extras, local residents dressed in the styles of the 1950s. "Fences" provides a rare opportunity to appear in a film with a major star, written by a major playwright.

They've taken care of the neighbors, too.

"Denzel had a party for the neighborhood," Said DeLouvpre. "It was this past Sunday."

Paraphrasing poet Robert Frost, "Fences" made good neighbors.
