Demolition Of Monsour Medical Center Underway

JEANNETTE (KDKA) - One look around the Monsour Medical Center and the word 'progress' comes to mind.

Demolition of the former hospital in Jeannette is still under way, but it's hit an obstacle in bringing down the large main tower building.

"Originally, there was going be sort of like an explosion they were going drop it that way," said Mayor of Jeannette Richard Jacobelli.

Instead, heavy equipment is being rolled off to put something really big together. Parts for a 110 foot crane are lined up, on it's end, a 10,000 pound slab of steel that will be used to cut through the building.

One of the most difficult aspects of the building is the heliport on top, which is held up by reinforced columns.

Once the demolition gets further along, people who use Route 30 may run into issues.

"I hope the citizens understand we may have to shut the highway," Jacobelli said.

The land will open up for development once cleared.
