Day-Long Cooksburg Standoff Ends With Suspect's Surrender, Arrest

COOKSBURG, Pa. (KDKA) -- A Cooksburg standoff that lasted more than 24 hours finally came to an end late Sunday morning when the suspect surrendered to police and was arrested.

According to Pennsylvania state police, John Macbeth, 47, of Cooksburg has been charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person.

The incident started just before 10 a.m. Saturday when state police responded to reports of an intoxicated man with a gun in a residence along Route 36 in Cooksburg near MacBeth's Store. When Macbeth refused to speak to police or leave the apartment, police obtained an arrest warrant.

The Pennsylvania State Police Special Emergency Response Team attempted to serve the warrant to Macbeth, and Macbeth opened fire on them. No police were injured.

Later in the day, police closed a stretch of road between River Road and Route 899, and it remained closed until the standoff ended around 10:20 a.m. Sunday, when Macbeth surrendered. He was sent to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

There were also power outages in the area during the standoff.
