Darren Dreger: Rutherford Actively Searching For Defenseman

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger joined Bob Pompeani Saturday morning.

Dreger said that Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford is working the phones leading up to the March 2 trade deadline.

"I believe that Rutherford will add another defenseman. I know that he's been working the phones pretty actively, Bob, over the last couple of weeks looking at some of the available D. The question is, is he willing to pay the price on say a rental like an Andrej Sekera, who he had with the Carolina Hurricanes? Or, does he want something or someone with a contract, and then things get a little bit more complicated," Dreger said.

Dreger noted that Rutherford has had talks with Toronto about a depth forward.

"Rutherford has talked to Dave Nonis, the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, at least two, maybe three times about Daniel Winnik. The Penguins look at Winnik as being a real good fit on that line with (Nick) Spaling and (Brandon) Sutter. I doubt that that discussion is going to go away until Daniel Winnik is traded," Dreger said.

Dreger added that Sean Bergenheim of Florida is a similar player in style that the Pens could be interested in.
