PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- State Representative Dan Frankel said he is doing what he can to put an end to gun violence.

He calls it a disease that kills 40,000 people a year.

In a meeting at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday, state representatives listened to medical experts discuss the impacts of gun violence in Pennsylvania.

Panels of experts explained how gun violence has become a public health crisis.

Also in the audience were members of gun advocacy groups who want to see change at the state level and beyond.

"This needs to be treated like a disease," Rob Conroy of CeaseFirePA said. "There have to be common-sense solutions, both through the legislature and our society."

Data shared at the hearing highlighted the increase in homicides, suicides and injuries from shootings in Pennsylvania.

Lawmakers hope the information from this hearing can promote legislation in Pennsylvania to make our communities safer.
