DA: Escaped Suspect Jumps Into River, Dies During Chase

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) - The district attorney says a Pennsylvania suspect escaped from a hospital, jumped off a bridge and died in a river below while being chased by police.

Cambria County District Attorney Kelly Callihan tells the (Johnstown) Tribune-Democrat the man was arrested in Conemaugh Township, Somerset County, but was taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown after complaining of a medical problem Monday evening.

Callihan says that's where the man escaped from police, ran toward a bridge and jumped into the Stoneycreek River, about 30 feet below.

Authorities aren't saying how the man died or releasing his name until they notify his relatives.

The county coroner did not immediately return a call seeking additional information Tuesday. An autopsy was scheduled later in the day.
