Giant Eagle Customers Chase, Tackle Would-Be Thief

SQUIRREL HILL (KDKA) – Customers at a Giant Eagle in Squirrel Hill are being credited with foiling an attempted theft.

The incident happened around 11 a.m. at the store on Murray Avenue.

Robert Twigg allegedly tried to flee the store with about $150 worth of steaks. A Giant Eagle vendor saw what was happening and jumped into action.

"He just jumped the barrier there and another fellow tackled him to the ground," witnesses says.

The vendor and some other customers chased Twigg down on foot and tackled him.

While Twigg was on the ground, he reportedly told the people holding him that he couldn't go back to jail.

Police say Twigg's issues with the law go back 11-years with drugs and retail theft.

He's now charged with one count of retail theft.

This isn't the first time bystanders have jumped in to help at this Giant Eagle, just last year bystanders intervened when a woman's purse was stolen, and good samaritans also helped bust a drug deal.
