Crews Battle Large Brush Fires In Poconos

CANADENSIS, Pa. (AP) - Crews are battling two large brush fires in the Poconos, but an official says firefighters are making progress containing them.

Monroe County Emergency Management Director Bruce Henry says the blazes in the Canadensis area aren't threatening any homes or businesses Thursday morning. He says the smaller fire has burned about 300 acres, but firefighters will likely extinguish it Thursday.

The larger blaze in state game lands has burned about 1,000 acres. Henry says crews with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources have it surrounded and nearing containment.

Smoke from the fires could be seen as far away as New Jersey.

Emergency responders suspect careless burning started the blazes, and a combination of windy and dry conditions helped fuel them.
