Man, Sister Rescued From House Fire In East Carnegie
EAST CARNEGIE (KDKA) -- A man in a wheelchair and his sister were rescued from a smoky house fire in East Carnegie on Wednesday evening.
The fire broke out just before 5:30 p.m. in the 400-block of Noblestown Road.
Heavy smoke was seen coming from the roof of the structure.
The man, who is wheelchair-bound, and his sister became trapped in the home. Neighbors say they helped to pull the man to safety, and firefighters rescued his sister from the second floor.
"I smelled smoke, heard screaming, said, 'Help me, help me,' came outside - me and my son - and the whole kitchen was on fire," said Kelly Lamb, a neighbor. "We just grabbed his wheelchair and pulled him backwards. He was trying to go back in and that's when I realized his sister was still in the house."
"There was a lot of fire in the first floor area," Chief Adam Kauer, East Carnegie-Scott Township Fire Department. "I'm not sure if they actually entered the structure or not, but I do know the lady was actually extricated by the City of Pittsburgh Fire Department."
They were taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital. There have been no updates on their conditions.
So far, there's also no word on what sparked the fire.
Crews were able to bring the blaze under control around 6 p.m.
Fire crews say the house was in the process of being condemned.
The Red Cross is helping the brother and sister living there.
