Multi-Alarm Fire Destroys Home In Crescent Twp.

CRESCENT TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of fire that destroyed a Crescent Township home on Wednesday evening.

A family of five is homeless after the fast-moving blaze roared through their home in the 600-block of Prospect Street, starting around 7 p.m.

Todd Miller, who lives next door, is a retired Crescent Police chief.

Miller said his sister and brother-in-law we're driving nearby on Route 51 when his sister saw a "glow in the window."

His brother-in-law tried using fire extinguishers to put out the blaze, but it quickly raged out of control.

Miller said his niece got a pet ferret out of the burning house safely, but several other ferrets were feared dead. Also, the family dogs were saved.

The small explosions that neighbors heard was the sound of exploding ammunition, Miller explained. He added that his brother-in-law is an avid hunter.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal has not determined a cause.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with food and clothing.
