4 Cyclists Hit, 1 Killed On Route 22

MURRYSVILLE, Pa. (KDKA) - Four cyclists were hit and one was killed in a crash on Route 22 eastbound around 4 a.m. Thursday.

Twenty-five-year-old Marcus Coblentz from Sugarcreek, Ohio was identified as the biker who died. The coroner says he died from blunt force injuries to his head and torso and the manner of death was accidental.

The three others were taken to the hospital, their conditions unknown. Police say the cyclists, all in their 20s or 30s, were part of a church group biking from Ohio to Altoona.

"They had lights on their bicycles and some reflective material on the clothing, but again, with the lighting that time of the morning, 4 a.m., it's tough to see you out there," said Murrysville Police Chief Thomas Seefeld.

The 16-year-old driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and cooperated with the police. Neither the driver or the 17-year-old passenger were hurt.

"It's kind of a stretch of area that is dimly lit. I believe at this point at least, she probably didn't have time to react," said Seefeld.

Route 22 eastbound was shut down near Harrison City Road but has since reopened.

There's been no word on any possible charges.
