State Police, PennDOT Investigating Parkway Crash

PENN HILLS (KDKA) -- An accident along the Parkway East near Penn Hills caused a major traffic backup Thursday afternoon when a car hit a utility pole knocking it over and partially blocking the highway.

According to state police in Findlay Township, the three-vehicle crash happened just after 2:45 p.m. on the outbound side of the road near the Penn Hills exit.

PennDOT officials said investigators were all but certain that the driver of the car lost control, went up the steep hillside adjacent to the road, and then slammed into the pole.

According to an eyewitness, at the time of the accident, there was a thunderstorm and the highway was wet with some ponding reported.

The view from NewsChopper 2 showed the car after it crashed into the hillside.

The driver of that car became trapped inside and had to be rescued.

State police questioned that person at the hospital.

Police, fire crews and paramedics were called to the scene.
