Continuous Snowfall Creates Traffic Mess Throughout Pittsburgh Region
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It's no surprise, the continual snowfall Saturday morning made a mess for drivers on the roads.
Even main roads were blanketed as road crews had trouble keeping up with the continuous snow in some areas.
Fifty-five trucks were out salting and plowing in 12-hour shifts. Many of the streets turned sloppy, especially on the hills. It's been one of those days when drivers are asked to stay off the roads.
But some people, like McKinley Brown, didn't have a choice. Brown had to work Saturday.
"People complain about the snow," he said. "But the last time we really had snow was 2009, on Friday we had 8 inches, the Saturday we had 22 inches. I couldn't move my truck for three days."
Many people locally admit Pittsburgh has been very lucky so far this winter. Even the normally treacherous Fallowfield Avenue in Beechview was passable.
On parts of the Parkway, though, several cars were stuck along the outside lanes, unable to move through the snow.
Officials also said Sunday that the speed limits on Interstates 70 and 79 through Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties has been reduced to 45 miles per hour.
In Peters Township, officials have banned on-street parking Saturday as well, so that snow can be removed.
The National Weather Service expects 4 to 7 inches to fall throughout the day.
