Community hosts fundraiser to help trooper shot on the job

ALIQUIPPA, Pa. (KDKA) — The community came together on Wednesday to help a state trooper recover after he was shot on the job.

Organizers wanted to help Trooper Jonnie Schooley and his family. A fundraiser for him and his family was held at the Beaver County Auto Car Wash from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

There was food, an auction and a 50-50 raffle. All the money from the proceeds went to Schooley and his family.

The event was organized by Lee Shetler, who does a lot of the detailing work for local law enforcement.

"We figured we do something for him. ... get some money back for his kids, family, and whatever they need," Shetler said.

Investigators said last month that Damian Bradford was threatening people at the Frankin Mini Mart in Aliquippa. They accused him of shooting Schooley in the leg.

When Schooley was shot, community members rushed to help him by applying a makeshift tourniquet to his leg.

Schooley's peers said he is a hero and it is nice to know the communities they protect are ready to help too.

"Sometimes in police work, we see all the bad, but this is enlightening," Trooper Matthew Hosey said. "It really shines a light on all."

Hosey said Schooley is doing well and is making a speedy recovery.

Bradford faces 13 charges, including criminal attempted homicide.
