Community Gathers To Remember Boy, 3, Killed in Fire

SHARON (KDKA) - More than 100 people showed up to remember 3-year-old Layden Thomas in Sharon.

On Monday night, Layden was killed in a fire at his family's home along Sherman Avenue. Layden's father brought the boy outside of the home, and went back inside the rescue his other children.

The family didn't realize that Layden had followed his father back inside the house.  Later, firefighters found the boy's body under a bed. Layden was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

"What happened to my son is unimaginable," said Terry Thomas. "I wouldn't wish it on anybody. I did my best, I got him to safety. He was a loving child."

Last night, neighbors, family members and friends released balloons to remember Layden Thomas.

Family members and friends are collecting clothes, household items and money for the surviving family members, which includes Terry Thomas and his wife, Brittany, as well as their 5-year-old girl and an infant.

"It's very sad," said neighbor Sandy Heeter. "A child. I mean, that's heartbreaking, it's just heartbreaking. They have nothing, they have nothing at all left."
