CMU Issues Temporary Ban On Hoverboards In Housing Facilities

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Carnegie Mellon University is the latest in a long line of universities to crack down on hoverboards in their housing facilities.

On Friday, administrators sent out an email alert to its housing residents, which read in part:

"Out of an abundance of care for the safety of our residential students, Housing Services, in consultation with Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S), has decided to immediately issue a temporary ban on these devices from being present in all university-operated housing (including all residence halls, apartments, fraternities and sororities)."

Students wishing to use a hoverboard on other parts of the campus are being referred to the university's wheeled transportation policy.

Last week, the University of Pittsburgh implemented a similar ban on hoverboards.

The bans come after several reports of the boards malfunctioning and catching fire. Additionally, Amazon and Overstock have stopped selling them citing safety concerns.
