HOMEWOOD (KDKA) -- A young early intervention student was left alone on a school bus in Homewood on Friday afternoon.

According to police, the child -- a 4-year-old Crescent Early Childhood student -- fell asleep on the bus. The bus driver didn't see her and, thinking all of the students were off the bus, parked and went inside a building around 1 p.m.

About 15 minutes later, officers responded to a 911 call saying that a child was locked in a school bus on Durango Way at Kelly Street.

Ebony Pugh, the Pittsburgh Public Schools public information officer, says the bus driver transported the child home unharmed after returning to the bus.

Police say the child is believed to have autism.

The driver, who works for ABC Transit, has been removed from Pittsburgh Public School routes and is not facing any charges at this time.
