Chief McLay To Speak About Police-Community Relations At DNC
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Pittsburgh Police Chief Cameron McLay has been asked to speak tonight at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.
Party officials have asked Chief McLay to speak tonight between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m.
The mayor's office confirmed that Chief McLay has accepted and barring any unforeseen circumstances, he will be addressing the convention on the subject of police-community relations.
McLay has served as chief of police in Pittsburgh for a year - coming here from Madison, Wisconsin.
He is a member of the executive committee of the International Chiefs of Police Association and is known as an expert in police-community relations.
The mayor's office said he will join other members of law enforcement in speaking this evening and will highlight his efforts to bring community-policing to the city.
Pittsburgh was chosen as one of six cities nationwide to participate in the United States Justice Department's national initiative for building community trust and justice
The initiative's goal is to improve relationships and increase trust between communities and the criminal justice system,
Chief McLay is in Philadelphia now attending the convention with Mayor Bill Peduto.
Members of the Black Lives Matter movement, including the mother of Trayvon Martin, are also expected to speak at the convention tonight.
