Chad Voytik Named Pitt Starting Quarterback

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - As Pitt football camp wraps up, head coach Paul Chryst named Chad Voytik his starting quarterback for the upcoming season.

Chryst sat down with Chris Mueller and Colin Dunlap and told us the announcement came as no surprise to the team.

"For our team, it wasn't a big mystery," Chryst said. "It was one of those things that I thought the focus didn't need to be on that. Chad [Voytik] and Trey [Andreson] just needed to concentrate on being a better player, a better quarterback, and I thought they did that in camp and wanted to announce it today to get all the talk out of the way so we can just lock in on game week."

Voytik will be replacing Tom Savage who was selected by the Houston Texans in the NFL Draft, and Chryst told us what Voytik will bring to the table that differs from what Savage did.

"Tommy really did jump in and embrace it, was able to be himself," Chryst said. "I think that's the thing that I like about this team right now is Chad is able to be himself. They are different players, I think Chad can just be who he is. One of Chad's strengths is his competitiveness and players know that, so they'll rally around him."

Voytik appeared in four games last year completing 6-of-11 passes for 116 yards and had three rushes for 26 yards with a touchdown and played the entire second half of the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl vs Bowling Green when Savage was lost to injury and led the team to a 30-27 victory completing 5-of-9 passes for 108 yards and rushing twice for 24 yards.

Voytik also joined the show and talked about what it means to him to be named the teams starter.

"It feels nice," Voytik said.  "Now it's time to move on and go to the game, we're all excited."

Voytik also talked about what that bowl game experience last year meant for him and how much better prepared he'll be for this years opener because of it.

"Just from a confidence stand point, I got to feel the speed of the game and playing some live ball when it actually mattered."
