Car Flies Over Grandview Ave., Down Hillside In Mt. Washington
MT. WASHINGTON (KDKA) – Police were on the scene of a crash, where a car went over the side of Grandview Avenue and down a hillside.
It happened around 12:30 p.m. in the 1700-block of Grandview Avenue.
A white sedan flew over the hillside.
The driver appeared to be mostly uninjured and was able to crawl out of the car and up the hillside. Although officials say he said that his back hurt and was bleeding from the forehead.
Emergency officials at the scene say he was unusually lucky to walk away from such a bad crash.
"Yes, he should play the lottery today, he's very lucky," said Amera Gilchrist, District Chief with City of Pittsburgh Emergency Medical Services.
Although he self-extricated himself from the car, officials say in situations like that, it's best to stay in the car -- unless there is an overt danger.
"That's safest because he could have risked falling further down the hill," said Gilchrist.
Emergency responders spend about 20 minutes treating the man and using a harness to hoist him over the hillside.
No word yet on what caused the crash.
Gilchrist also says the city will need to replace the metal railing that was knocked out when the car went off the road.
