Trooper Injured After Suspect Crashes Head-On Into Patrol Vehicle

BUTLER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A Pennsylvania state trooper was injured when the suspect in a police chase crashed head-on into a patrol vehicle in Butler County on Friday afternoon.

It happened around 4:40 p.m. at Whitestown Road and South Duffy Road in Butler Township.

Pennsylvania State Police say Butler City Police tried to pull a vehicle over for a traffic violation near Hansen Avenue and Renaissance Drive in Butler City, but the driver took off.

Butler Township Police and Pennsylvania State Police were called for assistance.

As the driver turned onto Whitestown Road, he crashed head-on into a state police patrol vehicle.

The driver, identified as 50-year-old David R. Coleman, was immediately taken into custody.

The trooper in the patrol vehicle was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police say a 13-year-old boy was in Coleman's vehicle at the time of the crash, but he was not injured.

Coleman is facing charges of fleeing and eluding, aggravated assault on a police officer, endangering the welfare of a child and numerous traffic violations. He may also be charged with DUI pending blood results.
