Butler Co. Commissioners At Odds Over "In God We Trust" Motto

BUTLER, Pa. (KDKA) -- A battle is brewing in Butler County over the "In God We Trust" motto.

A nonprofit organization, called In God We Trust ~ America Inc., is spreading the word across the country about patriotism.

Butler County Commissioner A. Dale Pinkerton is all for the idea, and so is Commissioner William McCarrier.

"There is a grassroots movement out there to put a plaque in all courthouses and schools that says, 'In God We Trust,'" said Pinkerton.

So far, two Pennsylvania counties have given the approving nod, Cameron and Lancaster.

"It's our national motto, we would not be here if we didn't trust in God," said McCarrier.

To that some may say Amen, but Commissioner James Eckstein opposes the resolution.

"I deeply believe in the separation of church and state," said Eckstein.

The American Civil Liberties Union agrees, and Eckstein believes there could be a legal battle.

"I think you should live, set a role and live by what Jesus taught, but not have it in public government," Eckstein said.

The ACLU says it has not gotten any calls over the matter.

Meanwhile, the vote comes at 10 a.m. Wednesday. If it passes, a new plaque will be ordered for the meeting room at the government center in Butler County.
